At one, a sign advertises the Republican Presidential Convention, showing pictures of candidates Arthur H. Vandenberg, Robert A. Taft, Thomas E. Dewey, and others. Another sign says, "See Our Performing Elephant, Got Everything." The lonely barker, GOP chairman John D.M. Hamilton, looks wistfully at the next door side show thronged with people, in which two men, labeled "Knudson [sic]" and "Ford," advertise, "Sure, We Can Turn Out 1000 Planes Daily -- It''s a Comparatively Simple Matter." The German invasion of most of Western Europe and the American response, focusing on aid to the Allies and increased national defense, tended to obscure news of the pending Republican convention. In June, William S. Knudsen, President of General Motors met with officials from the Ford Motor Company to discuss production of military aircraft. Former president Henry Ford announced that his company could produce 1000 planes a day. MEDIUM:1 drawing. CREATED/PUBLISHED:1940 June 12. CREATOR: Berryman, Clifford Kennedy, 1869-1949, artist.
