CD 1 - Berryman...TITLE:I''ve said it before, and I''m saying it again ...CALL NUMBER:CD 1 - Berryman (C.K.), no. 227 (A size) <P&P>[P&P] REPRODUCTION NUMBER:_ _ _ _ _ SUMMARY:World War II cartoon shows President Roosevelt standing in front of a barn labeled "Anti-Inflation Program." The door labeled "Control of Wages and Farm Prices" stands wide open, and a rambunctious horse, labeled "Cost of Living," runs away. Roosevelt says, "I''ve said it before, and I''m saying it again: again and again: we''ve got to lock that door." With the cost of living rising during the summer of 1942, it became obvious that the measures in place to stabilize wages and prices were ineffective. In September, the president threatened to use his emergency war powers to control inflation. Congress finally passed control legislation on October 2. MEDIUM:1 drawing. CREATED/PUBLISHED:1942 Aug. 27. CREATOR: Berryman, Clifford Kennedy, 1869-1949, artist. NOTES: Evidence shows cartoonist revised Roosevelt''s statement by using a paste-over (now missing). In published cartoon, statement reads: "I''ve said it before, and I''m saying it again: we''ve REALLY got to lock that stable door." Published in: The Evening star (Washington, D.C.).
