TITLE:This helps our morale

SUMMARY:World War II cartoon shows a frightened Japanese Prime Minister Hideki Tōjō, standing before a microphone proclaiming, "This helps our morale," while behind him, American planes fly over Japanese cities. In the foreground, smiling American air chief, Henry (Hap) Arnold, sitting in front of a sign reading, "20th U.S. Air Force," with a paper reading, "Combat Report on B-29," says, "O.K., Tojo, we want to be helpful." On June 15, 1944, American B-29 bombers from the 20th U.S. Air Force were used for the first time in the second American bombing raid on Japan. The bombers, which were bigger, faster, with a longer range, and carrying a heavier load of bombs than any previous Allied bombers, flew from bases in China. The Japanese belittled the effectiveness of the raid, but the B-29s eventually caused more damage than the two atom bombs.
