He tells John Q. Public (labeled "Taxpayer" and carrying a sign reading "''A'' Card 1 1/2 Gallons per Week"), "Be patient, my boy. Papa''s going to get you some gas." Gas and petroleum shortages during the war led to gas rationing with most citizens receiving an "A" card which provided the smallest amount of gasoline. Ickes proposed increasing the supply of petroleum by having the American government join with Aramco (the Arabian American Oil Company) in building a thousand mile pipeline from the company''s oil fields in Saudi Arabia to a spot in the Mediterranean, providing a guaranteed billion barrel oil reserve for the armed forces. In the end, the proposal came to nothing. MEDIUM:1 drawing. CREATED/PUBLISHED:1944 Feb. 7. CREATOR: Berryman, Clifford Kennedy, 1869-1949, artist.
