They cry, "It''s the League!" The Irreconcilables were Senators who had led the fight to keep the United States out of the League of Nations. During the 1920s they continued to strongly oppose any participation of the United States in European affairs, even objecting to the appointment of an American, Charles Gates Dawes, to head one of the commissions to try to resolve the problem of German reparations.
