President Coolidge, standing at a window, smiles down at a mouse. The cartoon refers to one of Aesop''s fables in which a mountain labors, making fearsome noises, and finally cracks to allow a small mouse to run out. In 1927, President Coolidge announced that he would not run for re-election in 1928, but many of his supporters believed that he might reconsider. In an effort to head this off, the Senate adopted a resolution on February 10, opposing the idea of a third term as "unwise" and "unpatriotic." The resolution was intended to embarrass the president, but had no legal effect. MEDIUM:1 drawing. CREATED/PUBLISHED:1928. CREATOR: Berryman, Clifford Kennedy, 1869-1949, artist.
