The One Hoss Shay was a carriage (celebrated by Oliver Wendell Holmes in his poem, "The Deacon''s Masterpiece") that lasted for 100 years in perfect condition before falling completely to pieces. The Democratic Party required a 2/3 majority to nominate a presidential candidate, a provision put in place, at the instigation of President Andrew Jackson, at the first national Democratic convention in 1832. One-hundred years later, in 1932, the Roosevelt forces tried to persuade the Democratic Convention to abandon the old rule. They failed, but succeeded four years later. MEDIUM:1 drawing.
