REPRODUCTION NUMBER:LC-USZ62-98622 (b&w film copy neg.)

SUMMARY:Cartoon shows the East Germans offering a "Free Ride Back for Returning East German Refugees" in a bus with bars on the window. One German rolls out a red carpet, another offers "Free Orchids for Every Passenger" and loud speakers blare: "Be it ever so humble, there''s no place like home in the Soviet Zone." A sign advertises: "East German Refugees. All is Forgiven If You''ll Come Back Home." Meanwhile one German peers at the fleeing refugees through binoculars, while another guards those left behind herded behind a fence. A record number of East Germans (225,000) fled to the Western zone during the first six months of 1953. The cartoon refers to the announcement by the East German government on June 10 that refugees who returned would receive amnesty and property restitution and suggests the unlikelihood that the offer would be accepted. Actually some did return.
