SUMMARY:World War II cartoon shows Senator Robert Taft as a lifeguard, pointing to New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey who is swimming far out in the ocean labeled "Post War Internationalism." Taft tells an elephant labeled "G.O.P." (drawn as an old lady in a flowered dress sitting in a beach chair), "He''s too far out." The elephant replies, "Don''t fret, Bob, you ought to see Wendell." During the war, the Republican Party was divided into those who advocated a return to the traditional isolationist stance once the war was over (led by Taft) and those who advocated international involvement (led by Wendell Willkie). In September 1943, at a Republican conference on Mackinac Island, Dewey, who generally tried to take a middle of the road position, proposed that the United States enter into a postwar alliance with Great Britain and suggested that joining a postwar association with other countries would not be a bad idea. Taft was outraged.
