SUMMARY:Editorial cartoon shows President Eisenhower, British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan, and French President Charles De Gaulle as mountain climbers, preparing to climb a steep mountain peak. They are roped together with a rope labeled "Unity." Eisenhower''s backpack is labeled "Firmness on Berlin," Macmillan''s is labeled "Easing of Tension, Test Ban," and De Gaulle''s is labeled "Disarmament." In the background can be seen Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev climbing alone, already partway up the mountain. In 1960, the four great powers prepared for a summit meeting in Paris. Chief among issues to be discussed was the Soviet demand that the Allies withdraw from Berlin and the possibility of some kind of disarmament. The caption refers to Benjamin Franklin''s comment at the time of the signing of the Declaration of Independence: "We must all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately." Jenkins was editorial and sports cartoonist for the New York Journal American from 1931 to 1966.
